The Annual Bake-A-Thon!

In our family, we have a tradition that spans over 40 years. Every Christmas season, we ladies in the family gather to spend the day making Christmas treats. It’s a day filled with baking, laughter, hugs and kisses, and lots and lots of taste testing. I remember the years when I was little baking with my grandmother. We would giggle until our bellies hurt, sample everything and smile all day long. It was a day I looked forward to every year as a child, and now as an adult it's a day I love to make happen no matter what for myself and my little lady!

Back then, my mom and Nana (Grandma) would plan the recipes in advance and have all the ingredients ready to go. Some of our recipes were "tried-and-true" and they were made no matter what! But my mother always had to explore...so every year we'd try something

new too. This led to the creation of our Christmas Treat recipe book! I scrap booked a recipe book for every lady in the house following all our years of baking. Each year, we'd review the past year, plan out the next, and add a page once complete. I recently pulled it down from the shelf to take a look at it...man have we learned A LOT! Our recipes are so different now. We have chosen to bake without any refined flours and sugar for the health of everyone in our family. And guess what, the treats are STILL delicious! It’s been a journey, not every recipe has been a winner, but over the years we’ve definitely found some new favorites. Lucky for you...we are sharing our "Healthy Tried-and-True" with you!

We believe it is important to teach our children that these Christmas goodies can still be enjoyed and part of our Christmas traditions, just in a healthier manner. A treat is still a treat, however there is no reason it can’t be filled with more nutritious ingredients. Treats do not have to be filled with chemicals, high levels of sugar and empty calories. In fact, we have rounded up several recipes that have heart healthy dark chocolate, insulin resistant flours (like almond flour), and naturally occurring sweeteners such as maple syrup and honey.

Family bake-a-thon

This past week we had our annual baking day. We tried some new recipes, stuck with some favorites, and as usual, there’s a couple I wouldn’t make again and a new crowd favorite. Below are the recipes we recommend. They have passed the children test, and the party guest test! So, take the risk...bake something filled with wholesome ingredients, take it to the party and be the change. We hope you enjoy them this holiday season with your children and friends too!
