A parent-to-parent guide for a season full of fun, memories, and nourishment.
Fall is here ā crisp air, cozy sweaters, pumpkins on every porch, and that unmistakable excitement building toward Halloween.Ā

As parents, we love seeing our kids during this season ā from carving pumpkins to trick-or-treating in their favorite costumes. But itās also the time of year when sugar, food dyes, and processed treatsĀ seem to take over.
At Nourished Knights, we believe kids can experience allĀ the joy of fall and Halloween ā without the sugar crashes, mood swings, and tummy troubles that come from the typical candy overload. Itās not about saying ānoā to fun⦠itās about saying āyesā to better choicesĀ that nourish their bodies and minds.
Hereās how to celebrate fall and Halloween ā the Nourished Knights way.
Rethink the Treats ā Whatās Hiding in Halloween Candy
Traditional Halloween candy may be fun, but itās not friendly to growing bodies.
Most are made with:
Refined sugar & high-fructose corn syrupĀ ā Spikes blood sugar, causes mood swings, and feeds harmful gut bacteria.
Artificial colors (Red 40, Yellow 5, Blue 1)Ā ā Linked to hyperactivity, attention issues, and behavior struggles.
Preservatives & artificial flavorsĀ ā Offer no nutrition and can stress a childās detox systems.
Processed oils (like palm kernel or hydrogenated oils)Ā ā Promote inflammation and may interfere with focus and hormone balance.
Kidsā small bodies process these ingredients much faster and more intensely than adults do ā leading to those Halloween-night meltdowns and next-day crankiness we all know too well.
But donāt worry ā weāve got plenty of clean candy swapsĀ and whole-food treatsĀ to keep the fun (and flavor) alive.
Our Familyās Halloween Candy Tradition
Every year, my kids come home from trick-or-treating with bags overflowing with candy. Like most kids, theyāre thrilled at first ā but after a couple of weeks, the candy just sits there, untouched.
Honestly, Iāve never liked them eating that candy. Itās not about being the āno funā mom ā I just hate knowing that every little piece is another dose of sugar, artificial colors, and additives that donāt serve their growing bodies.

A few years ago, I came up with a simple solution that has become one of our favorite Halloween traditions.
Hereās what we do:š Each of my kids gets to choose 10 piecesĀ of candy from their trick-or-treat stash ā their absolute favorites.š The rest goes to me in exchange for a special treat of their choice.
They can pick anything: something homemade that I bake, or a store-bought treat I approve of.
And they love it!Ā Over the years, theyāve requested:
Homemade brownies, cake, chocolate pudding, and chocolate chip cookies
Unreal candies
A case of Topo Chicos from CostcoĀ (yes, my son asks for this every year!)
Ice Cream for Bears, our go-to clean ice cream choice - itās sweetened with honey!

Itās become a fun tradition ā one they actually look forward to more than the candy itself. Their favorite part of Halloween is still trick-or-treating, not the candy binge afterward. And now, weāve made it something that feels rewarding, special, and healthier all at once.

When we teach our kids to enjoy real food, weāre not just protecting their health ā weāre building lifelong habits. So carve the pumpkins, sip the cider, bake the muffins, and let your Nourished Knights shine bright this fall
